SCOTTS TURFS BUILDER GOOD BUT NOT FOR EARLY SUMMER, NOPE.

Hi. I alway buy Scott’s products, they’re very good and expensive. I bought this one early June, I asked IF I SHOULD USED IT ON EARLY SUMMER, THEY SAY YES! ANYTIME.Well, It killed my GRASS?!! I used it in the backyard and 1 week after my grass is dying? I’m not happy. I should LISTEN to my Husband, he told me NOPE because it’s “almost Summer” Yep! Killed my grass is dead! Now what I can do? To revived the grass?!? Anyone experienced the same results?~> My fault and opinions I got and I fallowed. Now I’ll try how I restore my nice grass back. ~> Do not use it ANYTIME, NOPE GOOD, it will killed & dry out your lawn/grass.Thanks for posting this review Amazon.

    Working in some spots

Our soil is poor and I’ve been struggling over the last few years to get grass growing in more than one spot. This seems to be helping as putting this down before the grass seeds by a few weeks has seen a lot of new seeds sprouting. But it isn’t consistent as some of the harder to grow spots are still bare. Not sure why. But I’ll try this again with the fall feeding and see if I can’t get some of the grass to start. It has given a nice green color to the rest of the existing lawn and it is growing like crazy. So worth trying if you need to fertilize your lawn.

    Works great!

I live with very sandy soil and my yard get a lot of foot traffic in the summer with pets and entertaining. I put down seed and followed the directions on the bottle … I had grass filling in a rather large bare spot in just a few days! The grass grew quickly and came in full! Highly recommended!!

Worked great for reseeding after construction.

I had my driveway replaced and need to back fill around the new concrete, and reseed the grass. I sprinkled some the fertilizer and a Kentucky bluegrass blend seed and raked it in. I had grass growing up through the straw covering in 12 days.

    Not Impressed

I used this per instructions. I don’t know if it helped at all. My son seeded a few days after me and has mowed it twice. I understand he has different soil and different seed. I have mowed the rest of my lawn 4 times and the new stuff is not even close yet. And it has remained a very light green. Unless my new grass is really really slow growing, I’m not impressed.

    Noticeably helpful

I rent in a duplex and the lawn is not the landlords priority. That said, if I want decent outdoor space, I have to make it. I planted a bunch of random cheap seed on the dirt lawn and watered with this. Overall it made a big difference, super lush and green. I don’t have a huge area to deal with and this was plenty to cover it. Probably good for patching or small lawns. If your lawn is bigger, you will need the larger bottle.

    It Works

Our Scotts seed states 7-14 days for germination, but we see new grass in 3-4 days when using this stuff. Our soil is mostly sand. Don’t wait until you see growth to apply. It works best for us when we apply it the same time we seed. This stuff is fine-grained, so it broadcasts more evenly and thoroughly, and so less likely to leave seed with either too much or too little fertilizer than larger grained products.Scotts products cost more than most competitors, but we learned trying to go cheap usually results in starting over and ultimately spending more money, effort, and time in the end.

    Helped our seeds grow nicely!

As you can see from the photo, our small area of lawn is growing really well. This is after three weeks of seeding of Bermuda grass which was Scotts brand as well. We applied this fertilizer accordingly to instruction. Though I don’t have a comparison without the fertilizer being used.

Its ok if shipping gets it to you

Took 2 times to get me a non cracked bottle. This is amazon shipping fault. Product does good job for new lawns. Do not get on hands un diluted, it burns. Found this out when i opened the first bagged package and it soaked my sleves etc. Because the packaging was an unpadded bag. Second shipment was better in a box but 1 still leaked. Not as bad though

Help the new grass sidling get stronger

I made side-by-side comparison by growing grass seed in trays as DIY sod. The one with sprinkles of this fertilizer grows stronger, dark green with wider blades. Visually, it is a big difference. However, I only sprinkled a little, as it contains high level of phosphate.

Why does Scotts Fertilizer work so much better???

After twenty plus years of fertilizing our lawn and attempting to save money going to other cheaper brands, I always come back to Scotts! It kills me to pay up for Scotts! But it kills me worse to use a no name brand and watch the lawn struggle. If I had to guess, the difference is the ‘carrier material’ that Scotts uses, onto which they apply the fertilizing chemicals. Most fertilizers are a hard crystalline base material that seems to dissolve extremely slowly. While Scotts is a more ‘clay-like’ material that dissolves rather fast, getting the fertilizer to the plants faster. It’s most evident when the fertilizer lands on a side walk, after a rain the Scotts will be dissolved into a big circle, while the crystalline fertilizer pellet will still be setting there. The only drawback is if you leave an opened bag of Scotts exposed to humid air, the fertilizer will absorb moisture and it WILL CLUMP UP and WILL CLOG YOUR SPREADER! Rendering it virtually useless. If you get all of the air out of the bag and seal it, you can avoid this.

Should have raked the fertilizer in as well…

Excellent greens grade prill size and uniform one compound granules (Fall lawn food is also great in the Scott’s line as is Lawn Food but their Summerguard seems poor in quality). On a slope, consider spraying water soluble fertilizers instead of granulars to ensure no inconsistent growth from fertilizer washout. The Solo chest mount spreader is awesome for granular fertilizers (looks stupid, but the only way to spread anything in my opinion). For sprayers, FlowZone is the way to go. With a Flowzone sprayer I’m able to spoon feed young grass with water soluble fertilizers without even walking on it via jet stream on the adjustable nozzle, and the FlowZone can do quick change TeeJet nozzles all day for things like foliar iron and weed control. For granular fertilizers, ProPeat is great, and Humic12 is probably the best humic acid out there (or anything in the N-Ext line). Don’t make the same mistake as me by thinking all Humic Acid is created equal. I got the Humic DG (70% Humic, 30% fulvic), but didn’t realize the advantages of a true solution Humic for soil integration and nutrient uptake. Anything in the N-Ext line is what you want for humic, and Yard Mastery’s pricing is super reasonable. It looks like you’re getting a lot less humic per dollar vs. the DG, but your soil will thank you when it actually penetrates and gets black! For synthetic fertilizers it comes down to the NPK numbers, the prill size, and a non-differentiated chemistry from one prill to the next is a plus… like most of the Scott’s fertilizers, the starter fertilizer checks all those boxes as a high wuality product.

    Always the best

I ordered this from Amazon as stores in Maryland sell this stuff without phosphate. Since phosphate encourages root development, seed starter fertilizer without it produces weak plants. The grass I planted last year didn’t survive. By buying it here I get the “real” stuff. The grass came in thick and strong, and survived the summer. Great fertilizer!

Not the best way to help grow a new lawn…

Better options are available. I wouldn’t recommend this product not because there is something wrong with it, just because I found better options. I had a lawn that was sodded at the beginning of the sod growing season and was struggling. I did a couple of things that REALLY helped.1. Mow your lawn VERY short and catch all the clippings.2. I dethatched the lawn. I used a dethatcher like this one:

Truper 32120 Tru Tough Thatching Rake, Wood Handle, 54-Inch

to get all of the dead grass removed from the lawn. It was a lot of work for my small yard, but there are larger, powered versions available. It also has an aerator, which brings me to part two…3. Aerate the lawn! I used this little device to aerate the lawn:

    Yard Butler IM-7C Spike Aerator

. You can also use an automatic one, like the one listed above if you have a larger lawn. This makes little pods for your new seeds to live4. Overseed the lawn. I used

Pennington 100086830 Smart Seed Tall Fescue Premium Grass Seed Blend, 3-Pound

. I would advice AGAINST buying the “all-in-one” mixes just because you have less control over the process. If you want to be shocked at how LITTLE seed is actually in your product that is all in one. Just buy the seed and starter fertilizer separate. Use a spreader (I used this one:

    Scotts Easy Hand-Held Broadcast Spreader

to make sure that it was spread evenly.5. Add a Starter Fertilizer. I used this Vigoro starter fertilizer from Home Depot/6. Add in Milogranite [often! This stuff is amazing. I wouldn’t buy on Amazon, since you can get it cheaper locally, but Milogranite is amazing. It will make your lawn nice and dark green. It also won’t burn your lawn.7. Water every day. Make sure that the soil stays wet. I simply watered a couple minutes in the morning and evening. Even better, get a Rachio (

Rachio Smart Sprinkler Controller, WiFi, 8 Zone 2nd Generation, Works with Alexa

) to do all this the easy way. I’ll write a review soon.8. Wait. It will take a couple weeks, depending upon conditions to grow your new grass. I’m about to finally cut my grass, several weeks later and I’ll post before and after photos.

The Perfect Mix Equals Perfect Results!

I have quite a few issues with my lawn so I wanted to just start from scratch. If your not getting results using just fertilizer and watering follow my steps for a perfect looking yard.First rake up ALL the dead grass and nasty weeds, you may want to apply a weed killer after you’ve gotten all the dead grass and weeds.Give it a few days to set in and then start to apply this product.I recommend applying the started seeds with the Scotts 76121 Turf Builder EdgeGuard Mini Broadcast Spreader its awesome, compact and great! After you’ve applied the starter seeds I recommend using Scotts 18157 Turf Builder High Traffic Grass Seed Mixing Bag on top of the starter mix.Lightly water immediately after followed by a daily watering, once you see the grass start to sprout BOOM they all start taking off. I feel like these are my little babies and Im a proud daddy.Anyways buy this Product if you are trying to grow new grass, the bag is a bit small so if your trying to do entire lawns look for the larger bag.Overall score A+!!! Mr. Ellis highly recommends it

    Works great

I laid St Augustine late in September as we are warn and humid in the south nearer to the Gulf. The grass was slow to respond after a month so I tried this Scotts food for grass. It worked great. The blades of grass started to perk up and stand tall. I will put another dose down as it has been 4 weeks since the first application. I have used all of Scotts products for 20 years now with St. Augustine grass in Daytona Beach and now in the Panhandle near Pensacola and with a drop spreader and following the instructions on the bag for dosage you won’t be disappointed. Follow directions, don’t burn your grass by not watering.

3 pounds is not very much

Set the spreader at 3.25 as instructed.Covered a tiny area – seemed like way less than 1000 Sq Ft.I gave 3 stars – will increase or decrease number of stars after I see how the grass grows.

    NPK ratio 7-12-15.

I couldnt find the NPK anywhere on the add. Thought that was important. This 1 bottle is for 3 applications split by 1/3rd per week over 600sq ft size yard. I didn’t see those directions until I found a video on youtube about it AFTER I applied the whole bottle to my yard lol. Had to run out and rinse it good. Hope I didn’t burn it. The shipped box was dripping but loss wasn’t too extensive. Just messy. It sprayed fine. Can’t wait to see results on newly germinated perennial rye lawn.
